Imagine this. You’re at an office cocktail party with all the big boys from your company. Everyone’s had a few drinks and they’re loosening up. Formal jackets are being abandoned because the place is just so hot, and introductions are being made all around. They’re all having a good time, except you. You’re afraid to take your jacket off because people will see the huge stains caused by your sweaty armpits. You’re afraid to shake hands because people will cringe at your sweaty palms. If this is you then you’re not alone. There are tons of people who suffer from excessive sweating.
There are just as many supposed remedies for the condition as well. Most will argue that the best thing you can do is follow a proper diet, lose some weight and practice good hygiene. This takes time though and some are impatient when it comes to seeing results for their sweaty palms and sweaty armpits. There are some other radical treatments, but they all have their risks.
Oral Medications:
Some people may be surprised to learn that there actually are oral medications which can be used to treat sweaty armpits and sweaty palms. However, most of these are beta-blockers and carry a lot of side effects, from headaches to fully fledged blackouts. This means that, while it may be okay for a while, it’s not something that you’d want to be on for the rest of your life.
Botox:
This is applicable to both sweaty palms and sweaty armpits but tend to be more popular for the latter. This involves the injection of Botox directly into the sweat glands, which stops them from working but only for a few months at a time. It is important to remember that Botox is a neurotoxin and injections, especially in the armpits, can be very painful. Most insurance companies don’t cover the cost of this either.
Surgery:
You’ve tried just about everything and nothing seems to work. You do have the option of having endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) surgery done. How does this work? The surgeon will either clamp the sympathetic nerves which lead to the sweat glands using tiny titanium clips, or remove them altogether. This way, the sweat glands don’t actually receive the signals which would otherwise tell them to start producing sweat. Does this sound a bit extreme? Well that’s because it is and the decision to have such a surgery done should never be taken lightly. While the nerves can be excised, they can’t be put back.
There are many methods which can be used on order to stop sweating. Some of them are applicable to sweaty palms while some work better on sweaty armpits. The point to note is that there is no quick fix, and the methods which claim to instantaneously get rid of sweating are often fraught with dangerous side effects. Most people have found that, if you stick to it and give it some time, natural remedies do work. They have the added advantage of being gentle on your skin and are often much cheaper than other methods.
